Chapter Twenty-Two

Simon

Mark’s lips pursed into a small bud of displeasure. “But how did he sound?”

“Like Rolly. You know. Like himself.” Simon kept his gaze on his iPad. He didn’t dare make eye contact with Mark. During their conversation the day before, Rolly had warned him not to say anything to Mark about anything. It hadn’t taken more than thirty seconds on the phone for Simon to hear Rolly sounded stressed the fuck out. But in the end, he hadn’t said anything worth holding back from Mark.

“When’s he coming home?”

Simon was very tempted to say, “He’s back in the country at least,” but he wasn’t sure if Mark knew he’d ever been out of it. Rolly was being very mysterious, and even if he was back on home soil, he hadn’t made any mention of how much longer he’d be gone. He hadn’t bothered to tell Simon what he was doing that had him away from home and his family, and especially Mark, for so long. Only that it was necessary, and that it had to remain quiet until he knew more.

“He didn’t say.” Simon risked a glance, now that he was pretty sure Mark was staring out of the window and had his back to Simon. His spine was too stiff, his shoulders too erect. Mark was stressed too. “He sounded fine, Mark,” Simon lied. “Busy.”

“Doing what?”

No fucking clue, and it’s pissing me off, too. Simon had so far enjoyed the challenge of keeping Black Alice on schedule. The contractors had been great about accepting him as the new project manager. Things were picking up, though, and staffing was going to be an issue soon. Rolly had said only that he trusted Simon and Gina to manage things. But he wouldn’t even explain why he was keeping his own partner in the dark about where he was and why. That was the part Simon took the greatest issue with. What might Rolly be doing that would worry Mark more than not knowing and so prompt him to keep it a secret?

“He hasn’t said,” Simon confessed. “I would have thought he’d tell you?”

Mark shook his head. “We don’t talk about work when he calls. His rule.”

“He doesn’t want to know how things are going at the shelter?”

Mark made a disgusted noise. “We don’t talk about his work.”

“If there’s anything I can do…”

Mark just shook his head. Even from the back, he appeared miserable. “Thanks, anyway.”

A soft knock at the door brought both of them around. It was Yves.

“Whenever you are ready, Simon.” His French accent slanted Simon’s name into something more exotic than it had a right to be.

Simon grinned. “Why don’t you tag along?” he asked Mark. “You’ll like Joey. And you can help me carry fifty pounds of potatoes.”

“I told Dean I’d be in for the nine-thirty group session.”

Yves nodded once. “We will drop you off on the way home. It will be good for you to keep occupied.” Trust Yves not to pull any punches.

Simon frowned at him, but Yves just shrugged.
